The commissioned choreographer for this, the 13th instalment of the Baxter Dance Festival, is Themba Mbuli – The National Arts Festival 2016 Standard Bank Young Artist for Dance.

Mbuli began performing in youth clubs in Soweto back in 2000, according to culture platform Infecting the City.
Further, Mbuli has performed in works by acclaimed choreographers Philippe Pelen Baldini (!AIA), Gregory Maqoma, Moeketsi Koena, Sylvia Glasser, Thabo Rapoo and Kent Ekberg and others.
In total, 64 new pieces by 73 choreographers will show over a period of 8 days. There will be a main programme, an off-main programme (up and coming), and the fringe programme (youth,schools, traditional groups, etc).
The main programme will include invited and commissioned works, as well as the work of recognised professional choreographers and companies.
Among the other participants at this year’s Baxter Dance Festival are Moving Into Dance Mophateng, Charlie van Rooyen (runner-up on Season 3 of So You Think You Can Dance SA on SABC1) and Desiré Davids (The Floating Outfit Project).
Choreography by Kirvan Fortuin and Mthuthuzeli November are also on the playbill.
The Baxter Dance Festival aims to provide emerging and established choreographers and dance companies with an annual opportunity to present their work.
