Tribute shows are a minefield for an innocent punter looking to enjoy some nostalgia.

On the one hand, the songs performed at tribute or cover shows are always well-known and pretty populist in their execution. On the other hand, they are also always well-known and pretty populist in their execution.

None of this bothers the tribute show fan, either way. Many technically great musicians can be found playing these shows, and some even manage to bring a certain personal flavour to their sets that can make them quite something to behold.

That can certainly be said for several of the artists on the card at the fourth edition of Tribute Fest SA.

The family-friendly outing is a worthwhile option for this Boxing Day, running about 12 hours at a hugely popular daytime festival venue. This year the card includes accomplished performers like Mark Haze, The Rivertones, Johan Liebenberg, Ramaine Barreiro, James Marais, Patrick Canovi’s Kiss the Sky Show Band, together with Natalie Mosterd, Natasha Malherbe & Dean Coche and others.

Collectively, they will play popular songs by Elvis, Niel Diamond, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Alice Cooper, Bob Marley, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Depeche Mode, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top and Guns n Roses, starting at 13:00.

The challenge here, really, is to see how long it will take to lose your voice after singing along – you’ll most likely know and love every song on the day.
